ELLE’s July cover girl on her new look, her new man and also Chris Brown. The magazine will be available to buy on June 15.

On the album art for Rated R:
“I wanted pictures that represented strength and fearlessness but still femininity—a strong woman who can be vulnerable. Every woman is made up of vulnerability and strength; no matter what race you are, no matter what you’ve been through in your life. Every woman has that strength that is undeniable, but we also have really big hearts. It’s just us.”
On her new beau:
“I have a boyfriend. I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy. I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family.”
On designers she admires:
“It’s clear there are definitely fewer black women in the high-fashion industry. One of the things I respected most about Gucci was that they did a print campaign with me. I’m a black girl on a fashion spread for Gucci—that was a big deal. I respect designers who aren’t afraid to go outside the box. I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited. I thought, Okay, I can work that, for sure.”
On the past year:
“A year ago, I was very confused. Because he was my best friend. All of a sudden, one night changed our whole lives—not only our friendship, but our lives. I wanted to wake up one day and just not have that pain anymore. I wanted to be with him again or get over him—it was either-or. I just didn’t want to feel the pain, the confusion.”

Talk about rocking out for a good cause. Rihanna was on hand to perform at RockCorps show in Tel Aviv, Israel, last weekend, and to be one of the lucky folks who got to see the babe shake her stuff at the ultra-exclusive concert, attendees had to perform at least four hours of volunteer work. Way cool, don’t you think?
E! caught up with Ri-Ri, who was sporting chic blonde hair and a cute black and white dress at the time, to ask her about our fave franchise: Twilight, of course.
“Ahhh yes! I like Twilight,” the babe ‘fessed when we asked if she was a Twi girl.
“And I just got the book because everybody in my crew…They are obsessed with the book. They say you read it one day, you can’t put it down, and I’m like ‘OK, I have to give it a shot.’ ”
You’re just getting the books now, Ri? Better late then never, we guess. Redemption time: Team Jacob or Team Edward?
“Here we go. That’s a difficult one. I mean, I switch. Every time I watch it, I change my mind,” she laughed.

The NY Times recently published an in-depth piece on Drake, highlighting his rise from Jimmy Brooks of Degrassi High to being one of the “most innovative figures in Hip Hop”. In the article, Drake discusses his short-lived relationship with Rihanna. He also reveals that he no longer feels safe in his hometown of Toronto after getting robbed at gunpoint last year. Here’s an excerpt:
And on “Fireworks” there’s a verse about Rihanna, who asked him last year to write a song for her new album; the two soon began seeing each other regularly, though they never publicly confirmed their brief relationship. I was a pawn,” Drake said. The song he wrote for her never got released. “You know what she was doing to me? She was doing exactly what I’ve done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, wow, this feels terrible.”
Drake On Toronto
I feel unsafe in Toronto at all times. I’m a one of one. There’s no one else you can hate as much as me if you hate money, or you hate success.

Ursula Stephen is not only a celebrity hairstylist but a new image make-over expert and the shear genius that gave Rihanna the hairdo that caused her career to sky rocket.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
What was Rihanna’s initial reaction to the brilliant cut and your inspiration behind the ‘do?
At first she was in shock………
More about the color than the cut, because she had never worn her hair so dark. Then her attitude changed, she grew to love it and then she basically came into her own and I’m happy that I helped to bring that out!
As for inspiration, the Bob cut is fun and the Bob itself is one of my favorite haircuts; it is the best of both worlds- it can be edgy and classy at the same time. Fashion always inspires me and (I felt) it was time for a change. I was tired of all these artist looking the same, and I wasn’t about to fall into that routine.

As an expert that gives specializes in giving celebrities a completely different look, what process do you go through to get them to agree and feel comfy with the change?
Well I think (my personal style) helps that because I change my look pretty often, they see the possibilities. I (also) take time to talk them through different looks-giving them the pros and cons. Instead of just telling them what to do, I listen to them and we collaborate. Because they have to be comfy or it will not work.
Keyshia Cole has often been compared to a young Mary J. Blige for both her sound and personal style. Has the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul ever inspired some of your looks for Cole? Do you ever purposefully direct Keyshia’s ‘dos away from MJB signature looks?
No, there is no inspiration from Mary. I think the two are compared to each other more for their passionate performance style, but not necessarily their look. What I would say is that they both change their look pretty often. As far as keeping their looks different- yes, that’s my job to keep my artist distinctive. Though sometimes it’s hard in a world where we all like the same things.
To all of our Hair Apparent readers, what are some tricks they can try in order to see what a particular cut will look like on them before they take the plunge?
A great way to do that is by trying on wigs or be like Nike and “just do it” after all its only hair and it will grow back; or start at a manageable length and work your way down. It’s easier that way – this way you don’t get stuck.
Breakdown for us your look right now.
Right now my look is very T-boz inspired minus the big side burns; it’s one length all around, like an old school bowl cut with heavy blunt bangs which are going to be a big hair trend straight through fall, whether or not you are wearing your hair short or long.
